A.WAY Village

Location |

London Road, Brighton BN1 4JF

1. overview

Heading to or Heading for? A destination or A journey? A way or Away?

Living in the urban city, we seem to have everything we need - shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes, entertainment...Do we need all these? “What is your happy place?”

A.Way Village, located at London Road, Brighton, in between the main road and a residential area, 0.7 miles away from Brighton Train Station. A village that sits above the ground, approximately 40 meters in height and acts as a ‘Hill’ in the middle of Brighton. With the help of the local community, we created kiosks and spaces in between the platforms. People can enjoy walking up the hill without feeling alone, they meet friends, make conversation, experience spaces through the garden tunnels, board games, workshop... Together, WE create memories.

This village is a place which not only provides people with nature during the pandemic but also allows us to slow down our path & enjoy every little thing, appreciate ordinary happiness.

This project is dedicated to the old man I met a few years ago during a hike in Hong Kong. He taught me that the journey is more valuable than the destination.

A place which not only provides people with nature during the pandemic but also allow us to slow down our path & enjoy every little thing, appreciate ordinary happiness.

2. concept

"The idea was to reuse elements in much the same way they were used before, without 'reinterpreting' them. Windows remain windows; doors are still doors." said by Eva Prats [ Sala Beckett ]

The idea is the facade of the existing Fatto A Mano to be remained, convert the interior to a 'Take Away' counter. Customers can take away and enjoy their foods at 'A.Way Village'. The first floor acts as Garden and 'bus stop'. They can easily see the bus from a distance and plan the trip down.

A.Way Village,
a place created for_

As (any)thing can happen here. You are here to create your incredible journey!

The main clients of this project are the old man - Chan, the existing restaurant - Fatto A Mano, and the lady - Jane.

Chan acts as an inspiration for the project. He will be there from the beginning to the end of the stories.

Fatto A Mano is the main problem to solve - how to work with an existing building and provide a better environment for the existing?

Jane is another issue to solve - how to provide a better environment to the resident, especially having a tall building to stop the natural sunlight...

Lastly, YOU. As (any)thing can happen here. You are here to create your incredible journey!

4. vision

Once the Wisterias has grown around the 'Raindrop Columns' and has become strong enough, the columns can then be trimmed.

Wisterias play as the main element for this project. Wisterias climb by twinning their stems around any available support. They can climb as high as 20m above the ground and spread out 10m. Once the Wisterias has grown around the 'Raindrop Columns' and has become strong enough, the columns can then be trimmed.
