1. overview

Newhaven is one of the port areas in South East England. People can still travel from here to France today. The project brief is to design an archive in Newhaven. During my first visit, I realised that there were some fishing boats around the area. The environment, the smell, it reminds me of my mom's hometown back in Malaysia.

2. concept

The initial idea of this proposal is inspired from Newhaven fishermen's stories. One of the most memorable stories is that fishermen don't usually remember what was the first fish they caught, but how they try not to throw up throughout the trip. If the Pieces is to archive fishermen's memories & feelings, how can I create a space which allows people to feel like a fisherman?

The main objectives of the Pieces is to provide an experiential place where people can explore and discover fishermen's life. This project can be described as experiencing the historical in a new form - it's almost like a 4D movie. This place allows you to open up your senses - sight, smell, touch and hear, meanwhile able to learn the history of Newhaven fishing village.
